Meta Tags

Meta Tags are the tags that we use in the HTML file to provide information about the website to search engines. All the data we share in the meta tags are known as metadata, which can be read by search engines and search crawlers like Google Bot. These tags help search engines know more about your website.

These meta tags help search engines in ranking any website top in SERP, showing snippet, to not index any website, using different titles and descriptions for articles and social media.

How do Meta Tags help In SEO?

Meta tags are written in the head part of the HTML file, so when any crawler crawls your website it first sees the metadata about the webpage. Meta tags are a very important part of SEO. For example, if we are writing a new post then we know we have to add the main targeted keyword in the title and description tag.

And also there are few meta tags no longer are used for SEO like keywords tag. Previously when you wanted to rank for so many keywords for a single post, we just had to add all the targeted keywords in the keyword tag and it used to start ranking. But after 2008-2009 this tag is not that useful according to Google. Now all the search engines can crawl the entire article properly, by themself they will come to know about all the focus keyword. So no need to add those keywords externally.

There are many meta tags that we use in SEO, like title, description, OG, etc. So, here I am sharing the list of meta tags which will help us in SEO work.

Meta Tags For SEO:-

Meta Content-Type:-

This meta tag is mostly used for browser. Here in this tag, the developer has to define the content type for the browser, so that it will be easy for the browser to understand your webpages. Each and every page should have this tagin the beginning.

<meta http-equiv=”Content-Type” content=”text/html; charset=utf-8″ />

Viewport:-

As Google is focusing more on mobile-first indexing, your website has to be mobile-friendly first to rank on top of SERP. This will definitely increase your mobile experience. It is the must use the tag for mobile viewing.

<meta name=viewport content=”width=device-width, initial-scale=1″>

Title Tag:-

You can say that “Title Tag” does not start with meta word, so how come this is a meta tag? But it is referred to as one of the most important meta tags. You should have to use a title tag for each and every page on your website. The title tag tells about your webpage, it tells about the content in the webpage. You have to mention your main targeted keyword in the title tag.

The title which you will give to your website will appear in the SERP after the URL of the webpage, this title is in the bold letter so that the user can come to know about your webpage.

<title>TechNow:Be knowledgeable together</title>

Meta Description:-

Meta Description is one of the most important meta tags when it is about SEO. In this tag, you should describe your webpage because users will see this description first, as it will show up in the SERP to the users. According to industry leaders, it will not help in ranking better in SERP. But it will definitely help users to know about your page. According to Google’s own John Mueller, there is not any specific length for meta description but it is better if you will use between 160 characters.

In the meta description, you can add all the keyword you want to rank for, it helps to some extend.

<meta name=”description” content=”This is a technology-related blog, where I share about latest technology world news, reviews, launchings, etc. Here also we share knowledge about online earning through blogging.”/>

OG Tags or Open Graph Tags:-

OG Tags are specifically for social media. If you want to show different titles and descriptions than your website in all social media, then you should use OG tags properly. OG tag was given by Twitter. There is another tag for specifically Twitter, which is called as Twitter card, where you can write title and description for Twitter only.

Robots Tag:-

Nowadays no need to add any meta tag saying index, follow. If you don’t add the index, follow also Google will take it as index, follow. But if you want not to index the website for example in the development period, you should add the index code on the home page. Then when you want to index the website after completion you can remove the tag.

<meta name=”robots” content=”noindex” />

Language And Geo Tag:-

These tags are used on the website to specify any language or geographical location for search engines. It will tell all the crawlers in which language the website is and for which region the website is built. If you are focusing a specific part of the world then these tags are good options too use.

<html lang=”en-US”>

<META NAME=”geo.placename” CONTENT=”Place Name”>

Keyword Tag:-

As you may already know most of the experts in the SEO industry are not recommending this meta tag. And also according to some sources of Google also it is not helping anymore like past days. In early days you can add all the keywords you want to rank for here in this tag, and it used to rank for all the keywords. But with time search engines are getting smarter and smarter that can figure out which are the targeted keywords. But still, you can use this meta tag.

Site Verification Tag:-

Site verification codes are most important to add for all search engines. For example, if you add the Google Analytics verification code on the home page then only you can check the traffic of the website. For GA verification code you have to add on the home page immediately after <head> tag.

Conclusion:-

Here I have shared a few of the must use meta tags for better results. Please feel free to leave us with a comment.
